Sterling-Hoffman Life Sciences

Sterling-Hoffman Life Sciences advertises themselves as an Executive Search firm which can provide candidates for the Pharmaceuticals, Biotech, and Medical Device industry.

However, further in their website, they advertise they “accept” recruiting assignments for operational roles such as Trial Manager and CRAs.  A quick search of their open position confirms that although they do have some executive positions listed, these senior level roles are only a small percentage of open positions.  We noted Sterling-Hoffman also recruits for Engineering, Manufacturing, and Sales positions.  Their LinkedIn profile indicates they represent both life science and emerging technology companies in their search for senior leadership talent.

Executive recruiting is a niche area and requires certain talent to do it effectively.  I am always concerned when I see “Executive Recruiting” companies not actually focused on just senior level roles.

Sterling-Hoffman Life Sciences has a solid LinkedIn presence with an active international group of over 7000 participants and a company size of over 150 employees worldwide.   We didn’t find a blog, although there were some recruiting and interviewing tips on their website.

Very confused as to what this company is offering. As a contractor I want to work with a company that provides a clear vision on what they have to offer and this site does not offer that information.

I used Sterling-Hoffman for my contract at Quintiles and as far as recruiting agencies go, they can be disorganized. Not much surprise there. They didn’t mislead me in any way but I really wish they were more informative about what I was getting myself into at Quintiles. As far as CROs go I ended up juggling more than 14 protocols. I don’t know if recruiting agencies know that information upfront but I would think if they kept open communication with their clients I should’ve gotten a heads up.

I’ve applied for jobs several times with Sterling. They are high-pressure and add no value to the process.
Last week I spoke with one of their recruiters about a specialist level position. I’m seeking manager level and wanted to know if it might be upgraded. He said no, but the duties were manager level and it reported to the director. When I asked why it couldn’t be listed at manager level to reflect the responsibilities and reporting structure, he had no answer.
Then he gave me the script about a great salary and they were already interviewing and we needed to move very quickly, despite the fact that I hadn’t confirmed interest yet.
Changing jobs is a big decision, and pressuring candidates isn’t the way to ensure a good fit.
Also, in my initial inquiry I asked this recruiter to contact me via email as I do not have a private office, and instead of emailing he called me 8 times in 2 days. I won’t be applying for any more jobs through Sterling.

Rebecca, thank you for sharing your experience with us. I agree that changing jobs IS a big decision.

    1) You should never be pressured by a recruiter.

    2) Your recruiter should work hard to understand exactly what you are looking for.

    3) And your recruiter should never put you in danger by ignoring your request for preferred communication (i.e., don’t call me at work).

This firm is a sham. They do not reply to submissions or direct emails to recruiters. They email me to see if I know anyone about jobs when they should know from their database that I am clearly well qualified for the position they are asking me to refer others too. They do not return emails but tell me to contact their CEO on Twitter. They are not a firm I trust or believe is doing anything approaching a good job recruiting for anything.
